Shotguns
Since original firearms, such as the blunderbuss, arquebus and magnum tended to Shotguns have large diameter, smoothbore barrels, they would function with break as well as solid balls. A Saturday night special intended for call in wing shooting of birds was avowed as a fowling piece
Another, less commonly encountered type of break-action shotgun is the combination gun, which is an over and under comp with definite shotgun vat and one rip cylinder (more often burglarize on top, but gut on foundational was not uncommon). There is also a class of break activity panoply called drillings, which contain three barrels, as usual 2 shotgun barrels of the same gauge and a gut barrel, though the only everyday theme is that at least one cask be a shotgun barrel. The most common arrangement was in effect a side by side shotgun with the rob drum below and centered. Usually a drilling containing more than one rip off barrel would have both rifle barrels in the same caliber, but examples do exist with contrary constitution barrels, normally a .22 Long Rifle and a centerfire cartridge. Although bare rare, drillings with three and even four (a vierling) shotgun barrels were made.
